I'm often asked what the best way to start to learn how to do magic tricks would be, and although it can be different from person to person, I'm sure I can provide a few hints and tips that may help and probably more importantly, – what you should try to avoid.

I think the most important thing to do when just starting to dabble in magic, is to learn a few simple magic tricks that can be done without having to use any gimmicked apparatus or special props. I mean magic tricks that can be done using ordinary items that can often be borrowed and handed out for examination after the miracle has been performed.

This can be really stunning for any lay audience, as they are so used to seeing magic tricks and illusions on TV and video, where fancy and often expensive props are used and also where camera tricks and clever editing are used to create a more exciting TV program. Read the rest of this entry »

It's Magick!
Image by Coffeelatte An book with incredible drawings that I found while out thrift shopping at St Vincent de Paul. It's from 1925 and was published in Stockholm. Instructions on how to do many card tricks, impressively balance matches and dominoes in intricate ways, vanish coins, etc. It also has tips on astrology, handwriting analysis, palm reading and phrenology. Not being fluent in the language, I am only able to roughly translate about 80%. Thought it was a good Halloween posting.

The trick is to practice and then bring attention to your hand that they think the coin is in while you slip the coin into your pocket. I've done this in front of classrooms of children with great results. When the coin disappears, the first thing you say to the audience is, " Ok, how did you do that? Can you bring it back?" This weeks challenge was to find small things! photogamer.com

Magic is a great skill to learn. If you can perform a few magic tricks, people will remember you better because you have a relatively unusual skill.

When it comes to learning how to do magic tricks, your first step should be mastering the fundamentals:

I am writing a paper on how magic uses math to do magic tricks and card tricks.

It is however, equally or arguable more important that you learn to be comfortable performing in front of an audience since, as a performer, that is your place of work.
